Method to the Madness

The Steps for making a Logo

STEP 1 - STUDY THE CLIENTS BRIEF

Try to collect as much information regarding the design as possible. If they require specific colours, wording, or shapes included within the design they will need to be added at this point.

STEP 2 - RESEARCH

The primary goal of researching for the design is to generate value for the end user, that is, to meet a specific need. Google is your friend, search words that describe the history behind the client and what business they are in.

STEP 3 - BRAINSTORM

A continuation of research. The images and words you acquired for your design need to be branched off to create more words and so on to build a mind map.

STEP 4 - SKETCH

The fun begins. Let your creative mind flow. Review your collections and maybe draw some doodles to start with looking at the shapes of the items. It really doesn't need to be neat and tidy and this stage just go to town and make shapes and ideas. When you have an idea you like to build a few alternatives using the idea then move on to the next and so on.

STEP 5 - CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

At this stage, you will have many sketches and several ideas that stand out from the rest. Choose the best designs, open Adobe Illustrator and make the colour of the design, white on black and black on white. A good design should have a good silhouette and will need to be clear on every background colour.

STEP 6 - REVISIONS

Changes may involve a different font, colours or even moving back to step 5.

Try to talk to the client and help them make the best logo. It will be the face of their company for many years and needs to be perfect.

STEP 7 - COMPLETION

Well, here we are at the end. You followed through with all the steps of designing a logo. The client has chosen one of your designs and is very excited about the future. All you need to do now is accept payment and send the files to the client. (I like to send a brochure with information regarding the logo colour breakdown, mock-ups etc.)
